My name is Jamie Houghtelin and I am 25 years old and I have lived on my own for 2 or 3 years now.
I grew up living with my mom and dad in Escondido and after high school, I decided to move out on my own.
Through my job, at NCCSE (North Coast Consortium of Special Education), I met up with Beth, the director at LifeWorks and told her I wanted to find an apartment of my own and to help me build an awesome support team.
I was very nervous at first, but my first night at my new place was very exciting, independence at last! The transition was difficult, learning to do things on my own, but I got used to it and now I love it.
I still work at NCCSE and go to Palomar College. I love to hang out with my friends and I love to be with my boyfriend, Tim. I love animals and am currently looking to find a job working with them. I take care of my cat, Emily and me and my roommate, Ann, do chores together. I am learning to cook in my own kitchen. I also love to do all my own shopping, go to the library, and to go to dances with Tim. I have a really good 24 hour support team that helps me with tough situations and I always have someone to talk to. LifeWorks has been good to me and I recommend them to anyone!
In the future, I want to get married to Tim and to live together in our own house with a dog and a cat.
